Community Service Assignment - Update

The community service assignment is still on.  You will still be asked to either complete 3 hours of community service or complete the essay requirement. Please read the information below CAREFULLY!!

1.  The assignment is due no later than May 22nd

IMPORTANT - You are NOT being asked to choose any option that will make your parents uncomfortable! You need to discuss with them what options they are OK with and even see if they want to help. The essay option is also available.

2. The original community service form and the essay requirements can still be found here.

3. If you still have the form, or have the ability to print the form, you can fill it out and submit a photo of the completed, signed form.

4.  If you do not have a paper copy, you can edit the form I shared with you in Google classroom.  You must then  have your parent/guardian write and sign a note stating what you did and submit a photo of the note also.

5. If you completed your community service before the lockdown, that's great! Otherwise, because many of the community service opportunties you had 2 months ago have unfortunately been suspended, we will have to get creative with our options!

You can still do any of the original options if they are available, but below is a list of possible options that would also be acceptable.  There are explanations, articles, and videos to help give you inspiration.  These are NOT your only choices.  If you have other available opportunities, that's OK.  If you have an idea and aren't sure, email me!

- Help your neighbors who can't/shouldn't leave the house: check on them, offer to grocery shop, do their yardwork, just stand outside and talk to them through the door if they are alone. Anything that helps them physically or emotionally and keeps them safe.

- Make cards for nursing homes: call a nursing home and see if you can make and mail cards to residents since they cannot have visitors.

- Make "Thank You" cards: send cards or notes of thanks to essential workers, hospital workers, fire, police, grocery store, gas station workers, delivery people, etc.  Anyone who is beng exposed every day to help others.

- Inspirational Messages:  inspirational chalk drawings for people to see on the side walk or your driveway, signs in your yard or windows

- Food or supply drives: organize a drive in your neighborhood or with your family and friends to donate food for the local pantries, pet food (link here) and supplies, diapers, etc.  Whatever cause you feel best about is what you should choose.  Be sure to be safe in how you collect items from others.

- Plant trees: planting trees is good for the environment and the community.

- Read a book for children online: choose a book that you liked as a kid or that you still own, practice reading it until you are comfortable, create a video of yourself reading and showing the pictures.  I will create a webpage for all of the videos and share it with the elementary teachers so their students can have someone reading to them.

- Organize a "bear hunt" in your neighborhood:

(See article here)

- Make masks: sew and donate masks, create and donate mask extenders.

-Surprise meal: collect donations from family, friends, neighbors, etc and surprise a group of essential workers with lunch. Or, surprise a family who is struggling financially with dinner. (Purchasing the food from local small businesses helps them too!)
